ABOUT WORKFORCE PATHWAYS

Transforming the public health workforce through training, capacity building, and direct placement of professionals

Workforce Pathways for the Public’s Health, managed by PHI Center for Health Leadership & Impact (CHLI), creates a more equitable public health workforce. We offer internships, employment, service year, and research opportunities for current and future public health professionals through partnerships with AmeriCorps, governmental public health departments, and schools and programs of public health.

We support the development of public health professionals across the continuum of experience, from exploring opportunities and launching careers to investing in their continued growth.

Exploring career paths and raising awareness of opportunities

We help students, recent graduates, and prospective AmeriCorps Volunteers learn about public health career paths and opportunities through:

  • Online info sessions that raise awareness of career opportunities within public health

  • Posting job opportunities with local health departments and community-based organizations in need of professionals

  • Demystifying the hiring process and what it’s like to work in public health

Launching a career in public health and gaining experience

We help recent graduates, graduate students, and AmeriCorps Volunteers build real world experience and gain valuable skills working in public health by offering:

  • A residency program for recent graduates in public health or a related field

  • AmeriCorps Volunteer placements within local California communities

  • Direct placement of professionals within local health departments

Investing in the existing workforce and building capacity

We help public health professionals, health departments, and community-based organizations build their capacity and ability to create equitable outcomes through:

  • Training on health equity, trauma-informed practice, coalition building, and more

  • Comprehensive needs assessments to measure staff core competencies

  • Technical assistance and organizational development to align vision, roles, and impact

  • Relevant resources and events that highlight best practices and current issues in public health
