Joseph Hafey, MPA
Joe Hafey is President Emeritus of the Public Health Institute (PHI). Under Joe’s direction as President and CEO for 20 years, PHI grew into an organization with over $80 million in annual revenue, 600 employees, and 20 centers with over 250 distinct projects. PHI works in partnership with state and local public health agencies, foundations, provider groups, community-based organizations, and scientists to implement a variety of specialized programs that include research, training, technical assistance, media and public health advocacy, program design, evaluation, and leadership and public policy development.
Joe began his career in health planning over 30 years ago. As the Executive Director for the Center for Health Planning, he led technical assistance to State and Regional health planning agencies. He was instrumental in creating the first Healthy Cities program, the Center for Health Law and Policy, the Community Benefits program, and the Regional Asthma Management program. While President and CEO of PHI, he was instrumental in the evolution of the National Public Health Leadership program from writing the first proposal and running the program from 1991-1999. Joe was awarded a lifetime achievement award from the National Network of Leadership Programs.
He holds a Master of Public Administration degree from UCLA and has served as a lecturer at UCLA, UC Berkley, and Harvard University.
